American Idol visits the Twilight Zone

Can someone please explain to me what just happened on American Idol? Because it was an absolute train wreck. Between Ryan speed talking and basically shoving the contestants off the stage, to Paula critiquing Jason on his first and second songs when he hadn't even sung the second song yet, the whole thing was weird. weird. weird. WEird I tell ya.

Here's how the Paula thing went down, well kind of :
Simon , Randy and Ryan speaking over each other : " Paula. Paula. Paula. Listen, Jason only sang one song. "

Paula, looking dazed and confused: " What? huh? No he didn't. He sang two songs.

Simon, Randy and Ryan: "Paula, we are only on the first round of songs."

Paula, realizing she was in a "spot," replied: "Oh, he only sang one song? Oh. Ok. Well then those comments are for David Cook."

Queue the Twilight Zone music, Paul.

Sheesh. That was the worst show ever. Firstly, because that whole thing with Paula was dis-turbing. Secondly, because Neil Diamond is, well, umm, how do I say this, not one of my favorites. Thirdly, the show was rushed. We are down to the marquee performers. They should be able to take their time, and we should be able to savor the performances. And, oh and did I mention, I really, really don't like Neil Diamond. I guess David Cassidy was busy.

Yay! An American Idol chat. I just love it. But not tonight's show, you are right, it was weird. But I love Jason's song that you have playing.

Okay, I haven't watched it yet. We tape both shows and watch them in one sitting...can't stand the suspense of waiting and we have small group on Tuesday nights.

However, I have long thought Paula may or may not have a small problem with some type of medication, perhaps not prescribed to her. She seems to have these odd shows about once a month. Maybe it is just hormones, I will give her the benefit of the doubt and say she has wicked periods and has to take copious amounts of Midol.

I actually like Neil Diamond, a litle but I did think the songs would be much better last night. They all did better with their second round songs, though I like Jason for both songs.

I just don't get the choices of mentors this season. Mariah Carey??? when they always RIP apart any girl who chooses a Mariah song? that week was very unfair to the girls.

Then Andrew Lloyd Weber!?!??!?!? That was ALL horrible! Broadway songs jsut don't fit, at least his don't. This American Idol. picking the next pop/rock star and the two just DON'T go together!

Ok, I will try not to twist my ankle stepping of the soapbox.

BTW, the switch from Jason to Hannah on your playlist is WEIRD in a "funny reflecting of life today" kind of way.

Talked with Anna last night, did not show her the pictures. But I talked about choices and modesty and that I felt like maybe wouldn't be watching the show anymore, etc. She took it well at teh time but actually came down later and was visbyl upset and said "I'm so mad at Miley." Was in teh middle of million different things and couldn't follow up with that but will.....

I don't know what has happened to me this season. But I have opted NOT to watch the show but to utube the individual performances of the contestants I like. Call me lazy, I guess. I'm just waiting for the David and David showdown!

Oh my stars. I TOTALLY agree that this was the weirdest show EVER!! Not only was Paula bizarre but noone's heart was really into it. I'm a huge Neil Diamond fan, but everyone's song choices were all wrong. I'm not wondering if now that Idol is so huge, these kids hit insta-fame and adopt a kind of "why try" attitude. So many of them land contracts even if they get kicked off, so actually winning might not be as important. Just a theory.

Heather, I totally agree with your theory as I think that is Jason Castro's plan. He knows he is marketable, likeable and talented. He doesn't need to win. David Cook is so far beyond Idol, he is better off not winning. He is gonna be the next Daughtry. That's my two cents.

I was thinking the same thing about the whole show!!!!!!! Paula is falling off her rocker. ~Jill

I actually like Neil Diamond, but I just don't know that his songs are the best for re-interpretation. They sound like, well--Neil Diamond songs. I actually thought Jason sounded a lot like Neil Diamond! I think the mistake comes in trying to squeeze in two songs in an hour. i really liked Brooke's second song. I think on judge's choice night they should have her sing a Cheryl Crow song.

But it was weird--I agree. Paula was having one of her 'nights'. Poor thing.

OK, girl. We are BREAKING UP. 'Cause I love me some Neil Diamond...love, love, love him. I mean, I named my daughter Caroline and I'm still holding out hope that one day he'll sing to her.

Having said that, we quit watching AI a couple of seasons ago, when that atrocity called Taylor Hicks won. We refuse to support complete lack of talent. (Oh Carrie, how we love thee...and Chris Daughtry, who rocks.) Maybe I'm glad we no longer watch--'cause I'd hate to hear simpletons murdering the genius that is Neil Diamond. But I did watch David Cook's performance of Billie Jean back in March & that right there made him the winner in my book.

Oh, no he dih-int...Jason Cook did NOT attempt Jeff Buckley. Ew. There is no covering Buckley. Ever. Rabid Buckley fans, UNITE!

p.s. Ok, so technically "Hallelujah" isn't a Buckley original...but he's the one who made it FAMEous, so he's the one to whom it's usually attributed. Gotta clear this up or my reputation will be shot amongst music buffs everywhere. Just so you know.

Weird is an understatement for last night. I don't understand the choices for mentors/song catalogs...especially if they want to make them into "modern" pop stars. But I love what David Cook did last night - and what happened with Brooke's first song? That was a train wreck. Yup...the whole thing was strange.

I have not been watching AI this season, so I have nothing to add to this conversation except:

LULA, YOU CRACK ME UP!

I used to love me some AI... this season, I watch to see David Cook, that's about it. I am a big Neil Diamond fan, I just think that maybe it would be best for everyone if only he sang his songs.

Why can't they go back to choosing a decade and letting the contestants choose from there?

Heather is so right. Coming in 2 or 3 is actually better for your career than winning.

The excitement is just totally lacking...

I'm a little off the Idol subject here...Wow, Debbie! Two peas in pod... you & me!! Didn't you just love the movie Ben in Real Life? "Put it on my tab..." I'm such a Steve Carrell fan. Why is he so geeky, but so incredibly sexy at the same time? I have one of the songs from this soundtrack on my playlist... To Be Surprised. Love it! Such a happy song!! We could just talk and talk and talk about Steve for days. I love his humor. I'll have to showcase one of my favorite episodes on an upcoming post. I know just the one!! Benihana Christmas!! :) ~Jill

Um, really. Why do you people even watch ?

o.k. I just found your blog through onewiredwoman.
I don't watch the office, but i do like AI...And you say you could be friends with onewiredwoman...well I just meet her face to face and I fell like I have known her forever. So if you like her that I like you. As for AI. WTF...It was like the show was on roids and everything was speeded up.....My mind was spinning after the show....

Yes, last night was really weird. My husband and I started cracking up when Paula started talking. We even rewound the DVR and watched again!

David Cook is my favorite! Could he be even cuter and a better singer.

Gosh doesn't Paula see in like a re play how she is looking when she speaks!! Good Grief!!!! How can she just be ok with that? Granted if it is some prescribed meds doing this to her she needs to take one to make her combat her *zoning*, I mean I am not even there and I am embarassed for her.
And I like Jason, hard to figure him out but I like him.

Love,
kelly
